DENTON – North Texas sophomore quarterback Mason Fine (Cherokee Nation) was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, as on of the Davey O’Brien Award’s “Great Eight” for Week seven and also one of eight “Stars of the Week” by The Manning Award. Mean Green fans can go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for Fine for the best performance this past weekend. Voting closes at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday, and the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week. The Davey O’Brien Award quarterback of the week will be announced Tuesday.
Fine led an incredible game-winning drive for North Texas, while also completing 20-of-34 passes for 354 yards and had four total touchdowns (three passing). Fine orchestrated a 98-yard touchdown drive in less than a minute, with no timeouts, to lead North Texas to a thrilling 29-26 win over rival UT San Antonio. The Roadrunners led 26-22 with just 1:07 on the clock.
The Mean Green were pinned deep inside their own territory and Fine completed 5-of-6 passes on the drive, including a 49-yard strike to Michael Lawrence to put the ball on the UTSA 31. Fine then connected with Rico Bussey, Jr., for a 22-yard touchdown to go ahead 29-26 with just 10 seconds to play. The Mean Green are now 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2004, heading into a matchup at Florida Atlantic, who is also unbeaten in conference play.
