The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team will begin their first official day of practice today on October 3rd. Indian country’s own Bronson Koenig, of the Ho-Chunk Nation, begins his second season with the Badgers as they look to continue the success of last season. Wisconsin looks to be a lock for a preseason Top 10 ranking in most polls as the Badgers return 7 of the teams top 8 scorers from last season Final Four team. Having only losing Ben Brust from a squad that won 30 games and made it all the way to the Final Four.
Last season, Koenig appeared in 37 games for the Badgers as a true freshman and averaged 15.5 minutes per game, the second-most of any of UW’s reserves. At the point position, he scored 3.5 points and 1.2 rebounds per game off the bench. During the NCAA tournament he averaged 5.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game during with the highlight of scoring 11 points in the first half against Kentucky in the 2014 Final Four.
This season, the schedule will provide its share of tests with Wisconsin participating in the Battle 4 Atlantis that includes a field with UAB, Florida, Georgetown and North Carolina, Oklahoma and UCLA on the other side of the bracket. Also the Badgers will play more tough non-conference games against the likes of Duke, Boise State, at Marquette and at California. The Marquette game will feature two Native American athletes in this game as freshman Sandy Cohen (Oneida Nation of Wisconsin) begins his first season with the Golden Eagles.
