Costa Mesa, Calif. – Vanguard (5-0, 2-0) grabs another early season conference win defeated William Jessup 89-47. Doucette, Holsinger, and Kennedy combine for 71 points in the blowout win including 46 in the second half.
Vanguard fell behind 6-0 in the first four minutes of the contest, before Holsinger hit four straight free throws to close the gap 4-6. The Lions knotted it at six points apiece on a 19-foot jumper by Jamie Goff with 14:11 remaining.
The Warriors (0-10, 0-2) countered with a 4-0 run of their own, holding a 10-6 advantage. Vanguard took its first lead of the contest, 11-10, on a 3-pointer by Maya Kennedy(SO/Huntington Beach, CA) with just over 12 minutes to go in the half.
Despite William Jessup being winless on the season, they would not go away, as they regained the lead one possession later and pushed their lead to 14-11 the following possession.
The Blue and Gold retook the lead 16-15 on Samantha Doucette (JR/Irvine, CA) triple with just over eight minutes remaining in the period. Doucette added a 10-foot baseline jumper during a possession where the Lions grabbed four offensive rebounds.
Vanguard opened an eight-point lead after Kennedy nailed a jumper from the top of the key and drilled a wing triple on the next trip down the court. The Pride slowly built their lead to 35-25 entering the intermission.
In the first half, WJU shot under 32% from the field while Vanguard only posted a shooting percentage of 28.
Vanguard built their lead by scoring 19 more points off turnovers and a plus-eight margin in second chance points. Kennedy scored 12 points in the first frame and Doucette added nine points and four rebounds.
The Warriors Rona Chavez put up six points; Ashlyn Jones and Jessica Curl both chipped in five points.
Vanguard wasted no time in the second period, blowing the game open by a 20-point margin shortly into the final half.
Riley Holsinger (Nez Perce Tribe) scored 17 of her 21 points after the intermission along with snagging 11 total rebounds, a team high for the contest. Doucette shot 4-9 in the second period to finish with 21 points and nine boards, one shy of a double-double. Kennedy shot 7-11 for her 19 points.
Vanguard shot a blistering 18-20 from the charity stripe after half time as well a posting a plus-37 margin in points off turnovers.
Jones and Chavez dropped nine points each to lead the Warriors in scoring. Curl grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with her seven points.
Vanguard continues GSAC play when they travel to The Master’s College on Saturday, December 13th. The game will commence at 5:30 p.m.
