The Briar Cliff men’s track team finished in second place at the Chelsea M. Henkenius Open held at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. The Chargers finished with 104 points, only trail host Wartburg’s 149.5 points.
Robert Iron Shell (Rosebud Sioux) turned in a pair of first place finishes, blazing the track in the 200 meter with a time of 22.07 and clocking a 49.39 in the 400 meter. Joe Jackson also had a first place finish in the 1000 meter, running a 2:32.31. Three relay teams also helped lead the Cliff to its second place finish with the 4×400 and distance medley teams placing first and the 4×800 squad finished second. The 4×4 team of Rusty Muncy, Tobe Ezimore, Iron Shell and Joe Roden clocked a 3:23.33, the distance medley team of Tommy Thelen, Roden, Jackson and Mitchell Schleis recorded a 10:30.13 and the 4×8 team of Matt Mayer, Tyler Smith, Zach Kollasch and Tony Kollasch ran an 8:10.66. Muncy notched two second place finishes with a 7.02 in the 60 meter dash and a 22.45 in the 200m. Also placing in the top-five were Schlies in the 800m with a 1:58.55 (4th place), Blake Mossberg in the 200 with a 22.93 (5th place) and Joe Heinrichs in the 1000 meter with a 2:39.16 (5th-place). Other top-10 finishes were Erimore in the 400m with a 51.80 (6th), Heinrichs in the 600m with a 1:25.49 (6th), Thelen in the 800m with a 2:01.79 (7th),Zach Kollasch in the mile with a 4:51.40 (7th), Mossberg in the 60m with a 7.13 (9th),Tony Kollasch in the 800m with a 2:07.41 (9th) and Smith in the 600m with a 1:27.39 (10th).
The Chargers will hit the track again next Saturday in Storm Lake, Iowa as part of the Buena Vista Dennis Young Classic.
