by PORTLAND, Ore. – Reuben Silvas (Pascua Yaqui Tribe) was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the week announced the league office on Monday.
Silvas had 33 points, shooting 62.5 percent (15-of-24) as the Nanooks made their 2014-15 regular season debut in the GCI Alaska Invitational. The junior college transfer from Arizona also had 16 rebounds, two assists and a steal and wasn’t charged with a turnover in earning all-tournament honors as the Nanooks won one of three contests.
Alaska now embarks on a six game road trip, beginning with the Notre Dame De Namur Tournament next weekend when it takes on Notre Dame De Namur and Holy Names in Belmont, California.
It is a great honor to see a tribal Yaqui member from my tribe to see him succeed in such an amazing way. I pray this young man will encourage more youth in our tribe and continue to be a great role model for them. congratulations to him and his family .
