San Diego Christian Head Coach Anessa Wolfblack (Cheyenne/Lakota) Begins her Coaching Career with a Victory

ANCASTER, Calif. – The 2022-23 San Diego Christian College women’s basketball squad wasted no time in earning new head coach, Anessa Wolfblack (Cheyenne/Lakota) her first collegiate coaching victory. The squad put together a gutsy performance to earn a 67-56, come-from-behind victory over the Lincoln University Oaklanders on Saturday.

Hawk senior, Keren Hogue logged SDCC’s first points of the new season when she drained a 3-pointer in the first minute. The two teams would battle point-for-point during the first half, with the Oaklanders holding a five-point, 29-34 lead at the half.

San Diego Christian would show their mettle and open the third quarter with an 8-1 run on buckets by Mamaeia Makoni, Jamee Joseph, Cynnadie Whatley, and Haylie Anderson to take the lead. The team would stand on the gas in the quarter outscoring Lincoln University 20-8. Strong defensive team rebounding by San Diego Christian kept the ball in SDCC’s hands. Anderson would catch fire from 3-point territory sending the Hawk bench into a frenzy.

In the final period, the Hawks would make the most of repeated trips to the free-throw line to ice the game. Three Hawks would hit double digits in scoring. After missing most of the 2021-22 campaign, Anderson would make up for lost time and finish with a game-leading 19 points. All-GSAC player, Keren Hogue would add an additional 15 points (9 rebounds), and Jamee Joseph would put in 13. Newcomer, Hanna Bonacker would haul in 10 boards to lead all players on defense.

Wolfblack had this to say about the victory, “It felt great to play our first game of the season. We need to get better at a few things, but this game was a step in the right direction in building our program. It made the victory even more sweet knowing we were down at halftime. Our players really responded to adversity.”
