LOGAN, Utah — Utah State women’s basketball (4-8, 2-5 MW) was held to a season-low 59 points, as the Aggies dropped part one of a two-game series to UNLV (6-6, 4-3 MW), 89-59, inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
After a high-scoring first half in which Utah State shot 43.6 percent (17-of-39) from the field, the Lady Rebels led, 45-37. USU was able to cut the UNLV lead within three points soon after halftime, but with several Aggie players in foul trouble, UNLV was able to gain separation. UNLV out-scored Utah State in the fourth quarter, 27-7. The Lady Rebels won the overall rebounding battle, 61-37, including 20 offensive rebounds to five.
Redshirt sophomore guard Shyla Latone (Zuni Pueblo) led USU’s scoring efforts with 12 points, her third double-digit outing in the past four games. Latone also led the team with a career-high six rebounds. Senior guard Emmie Harris also reached double-figures in what was the 100th appearance of her collegiate career, adding 10 points to go along with five rebounds and a team-leading four assists.
The Lady Rebels were led in both scoring and rebounding by redshirt sophomore forward Delaynie Byrne, who finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.
As a team, Utah State shot 34.3 percent (23-of-67) from the field, 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the free throw line. UNLV shot 36.8 percent (28-of-76) from the field, while shooting 30.0 percent (9-of-30) from the 3-point line and 80.0 percent (24-of-30) from the charity stripe.
