WICHITA, Kan. – Starting off strong on day one of the Friends Tournament, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (13-4) went 1-2 after getting the victory in the first game of the tournament.
The Drovers got the 4-0 victory over Kansas Wesleyan after having another dominating pitcher performance from Summer Leitka (10-1).
Leitka (Seminole Nation of Oklahoma) threw her eighth complete game and fourth shutout of the season while allowing three hits and striking out 11 in route to her 10th win of the season.
The Drovers struck first when Kayla Adams drew a bases loaded walk to give USAO the 1-0 advantage before striking for the final three runs in the bottom of the third.
Adams struck again in the three-run third inning to start the action when a sacrifice fly scored Tate Landmark to make it a 2-0 advantage.
Sevie Carel got her lone hit in the bottom of the third with a single to left center to score two runs to make the final 4-0 advantage on the game.
Against (RV) Ottawa University out of Kansas, the Drovers had their four-game winning streak snapped when the Lady Braves took the 10-3 victory over USAO.
The hit to break up the shutout on the game was a deep three-run homer to left center by Courtney Capps, who finished the game going 2-for-4 and scoring one run on the game.
In the final game of day one, Tabor College, also out of Kansas, earned the 6-1 victory over USAO, with the one run coming in the bottom of the sixth to break up the shutout.
Shania Beck went 1-for-3, hitting an RBI single to score Dani Warren. Beck also pitched two innings in the game against Tabor while making her debut in the circle in the previous game against Ottawa.
USAO will start day two of the Friends Tournament against University of Saint Mary at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Drovers will then turn around and play Southwestern College at noon to finish the tournament.
