Tia Woods (Navajo) 13 Points and 10 Rebounds help Haskell Indian Nations University Hold Off Kansas Wesleyan, 64-62

(Salina, Kansas) – Haskell Indian Nations University Tia Woods (Navajo) earned her first double-double of her college career as the Lady Indians held off a late rally by the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes  to win 64-62 Wednesday night at Mabee Arena in Salina.

Coming off their first loss of the season last week to a highly ranked team, Haskell (2-1) responded by getting back on track with the win over the Coyotes from the KCAC conference.

Haskell’s forte is forcing turnovers with its full-court pressure. Bethany had 28 turnovers and Hastings 30 in the Indians’ two previous games and in this game the Indians created 22 turnovers that led to 18 points.

Haskell was lead by another freshman Kasey Rice (Pawnee) who had a career-high 23 points along with 4 steals on the evening. Woods followed with her 13 points and 10 rebounds to round out the double-digit scoring.

The Indians shot 40 percent (13 of 29) in the first half and 36 percent the second (9 of 25). Their 16 steals, to Kansas Wesleyan’s 6 steals, and points where the only stat category Haskell led in, but the smaller Indians outscored them 30-22 in the paint.

Rounding out the scorers on the night for Haskell were; Sierra Penn (9), Tiana Guillory (8), Janee Bates and Nykki Benally each had 5 points.

Next up for Haskell women’s basketball is another road trip, this time to the Tara Patterson Classic on November 9th and 10th that will be held at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. They are set to play at 7PM on Friday and 5PM on Saturday.
