University of Arkansas- Fort Smith sophomore guard Seth Youngblood (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) has been named Heartland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his performance last week against Northeastern State and No. 10 Central Missouri.
Youngblood, a native of Roland, Okla., averaged 29.5 points, 4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during the Lions’ two games last week – an 86-40 win against Northeastern State and a 111-106 triple overtime loss to defending national champion Central Missouri.
He shot 61 percent from the field (17 for 28), 63 percent from 3-point range (12 for 19) and 87 percent from the free-throw line (13 for 15).
Against unbeaten Central Missouri, Youngblood scored a career-high and school-record 48 points and made a career-high and school single-game record nine 3-pointers.
Youngblood’s 48 points shattered the school’s single-game scoring mark of 35 points set by former Lions guard Josh Simmons against Lincoln University on Jan. 14, 2010. Youngblood’s previous career-high was 28 points set against Lubbock Christian last season on Feb. 1.
He was 14-for-21 shooting from the field – he was 9-for-14 shooting from 3-point range – and was 11-for-13 shooting from the free-throw line. He also had 3 rebounds, 1 blocked shot and 1 steal.
Youngblood’s nine 3-pointers eclipsed the previous school record of eight set by former Lions guard Jake Toupal against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Jan. 5, 2012.
It was the second overtime game of the season for UAFS and the first triple overtime game for the Lions since joining the Division II ranks in the 2009. The 106 points scored by the Lions is tied for the eighth-most points scored by the team during the Division II era.
