UC Irvine, with three runners in the top nine spots, finished second in the adidas/UCI Invitational at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields Saturday morning.
Alex Tebbe led the ‘Eaters in their season opener, placing second of 108 runners with a time of 25:40.8 over the 8,000-meter course.
Isaiah Thompson was fifth in 25:56.0 and Munir Kahssay ninth with a time of 26:30.5.
Jake Williams finished in 36th place in 27:26.8, Matt Neev was 39th in 27:32.8,Blake Wanser 55th in 28:22.5 and Eric Enriquez was 62nd in 28:35.3.
Central Arizona, led by individual champion Harry Mulenga (24:54.5), won the team title with 43 points.
UCI was second with 71 points and The Masters third with 80.
The meet marked the debut for Jeff Perkins as UCI’s head cross country coach.
The ‘Eaters return to action Sept. 20 at the Mustang Invitational in Santa Clarita.
