UMary’s Coral Gillette (MHA/Sioux) Knocks Down Five 3-Pointers in Season Opening Victory Over MSU Billings

LOS ANGELES, CA – A scoring outburst led by defending NSIC Player of the year, Cassie Askvig led the University of Mary women’s basketball team to a dominant 81-55 win over Montana State – Billings to kick off play at the CCA Division II Tipoff.

Four Marauders found themselves in double figure points during the game with Askvig leading the way with 25. Sharpshooter Coral Gillette (MHA/StandingRockSioux), caught fire, knocking down five three pointers on the game. Lexie Schneider and Lauren Rotunda both added eleven points. In total, 10 different Marauders got buckets during the game.

FIRST HALF BREAKDOWN

Askvig and Macy Williams led the way for UMary in the first half. Askvig had a team high 11 points in the first half with Macy Williams accounting for all seven of her points. Lauren Rotunda got the scoring going for the Marauders with a three pointer. MSUB follow that up by taking a 4-3 lead 1:10 into play but that would be the last time the Marauders relinquished the lead, taking the lead and building off of it for the remainder of the game. UMary outscored the Yellowjackets by seven in the first quarter and four in the second to take a 11 point lead to half.

SECOND HALF BREAKDOWN

The third quarter was the Marauders best quarter, putting up 27 points and outscoring MSUB by 12. Askvig continued to lead the way in scoring adding 14 more points in the second half. It was Coral Gillette who provided the big spark for UMary in half number two, knocking down four of her five three point attempts, including three in the third quarter. UMary began the second half on a 9-0 run, sparked by four points by Lexie Schneider and a three by Coral Gillette. The Marauders concluded the game by outscoring the Yellowjackets 17-14 in the fourth quarter which completed UMary’s efforts in outscoring MSUB in every quarter.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Cassie Askvig recorded 25 points, three rebounds, a steal, and an assist. She shot 75% from the field, 67% from deep, and 88 percent from the free throw line

Coral Gillette went 5-11 from deep, scoring 15 points while having four rebounds, three assists, and three steals

Lauren Rotunda posted 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, a block, and a steal

Lexie Schneider had 11 points and five rebounds

Macy Williams recorded seven points, four assists, and two rebounds
