Weber State tops NM State in double-overtime, 100-97; Abby Scott (Warm Springs Tribe) with 9 Points for Aggies

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Junior Sasha Weber scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, however, New Mexico State dropped a 100-97 double-overtime thriller to Weber State Friday afternoon at the Pan American Center.

“We hustled and played hard but at the end of the day we missed too many free throws and didn’t execute on defense,” NM State head coach Mark Trakh said. “We need to find a way to close out and ice games and we were unable to do that.”

The Aggies had the chance to win the game in the waning moments of the first overtime. With 28 seconds remaining Weber slashed to the basket and made it 87-82. However, WSU went on a 5-0 run and Kailie Quinn hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 87-all.

In the second overtime the Wildcats opened on a 5-0 run and led 92-87 at 4:15. The Aggies responded with an 8-2 run of their own and a Abby Scott hit a 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining to give NM State a 95-94 lead. However, its lead was short lived and the Wildcats hit their free throws down the stretch and closed out the game on a 6-2 run.

“It’s disappointing, but we have to learn from the mistakes and miscues that cost us the game,” added Trakh.

Brianna Freeman scored a career-high 19 points and picked up eight rebounds. Abby Scott (Warm Springs Tribe) had 9 points and 4 rebounds on the afternoon.

The Aggies played well under the basket and outrebounded the Wildcats 68-47. As a team NM State shot 35 percent (30-of-84) from the field.

WSU hit 42 percent (33-of-78) of its shots.

Quinn scored a game-high 20 points to lead WSU (4-2).

The Aggies (0-4) return to the hardwood Saturday afternoon and play host to Cal-State Fullerton at 1 p.m.
